Angela Merkel, 62, is already trying to dominate the G20 summit talks saying: “I will lead the G20 negotiations in Hamburg with the aim of furthering the goals of the Paris climate deal.”Talks on climate change are expected to be high up the agenda when the discussions amongst the world’s 20 most powerful nations begins.
Despite the tough talk the German leader was on a charm offensive on the red carpet as she met the other world leaders. Mrs Merkel had already set out her stall this morning ahead of the international meeting, telling the German parliament the European Union (EU) was united more than ever.She said: “The EU’s unity is greater than some heated debates might suggest.
“The remaining EU-27 are well prepared for the Brexit negotiations.” In an attack on Brexit and Theresa May, she added: “Those who believe that these problems can be solved with isolationism and protectionism are seriously misled.”World leaders are meeting in Hamburg for the G20 which starts next week, with preparatory meetings taking place today.The summit will largely focus on the Paris climate change agreement, which Donald Trump pulled out of earlier this month.
Standing firm, Mrs Merkel said: “Those who believe that these problems can be solved with isolationism and protectionism are seriously misled.”We are convinced that climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, an existential challenge,” she told the German parliament.”We cannot wait to act until the science has convinced every last doubter.”
